What Happens During a Thermography Appointment? A Step-by-Step Guide

First appointments naturally come with questions. That’s completely normal — and the fact that you’re curious enough to look this up before your visit tells us something good about the kind of patient you are. To learn more about Thermography, please read this article for additional insights.

The short version: a thermography appointment at ThermaImage is relaxed, comfortable, and typically takes about 20–30 minutes.

There’s no discomfort, nothing entering your body, and nothing to worry about. In fact, many clients leave feeling good about taking a proactive step for their health.

Still, understanding the process ahead of time can help you feel more confident and prepared — so let’s walk through the experience step by step.

Before Your Appointment: Preparation Matters

Accurate thermography depends on stable skin temperature readings. To ensure reliable results, your body’s surface temperature should not be influenced by external heat or stimulation before your scan.

In the four hours before your appointment, please avoid:

  • Exercise or intense physical activity

  • Hot showers, baths, or sauna use

  • Applying lotions, oils, creams, or sprays to the areas being scanned

  • Sun exposure, tanning, or heat lamps

  • Stimulants like caffeine or nicotine shortly before your visit

  • Chiropractic adjustments or massage on the areas to be scanned

You should also wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove.

For breast thermography, you will undress from the waist up. For full-body scans, our team will guide you on what areas will be imaged.

If you are scheduling a breast thermography scan, it is generally best not to schedule during the week immediately before your menstrual period, since hormonal changes may temporarily affect thermal patterns. Mid-cycle appointments often produce the most stable readings.

Step 1: Your Health History Intake

When you arrive at ThermaImage, you will begin with a brief intake conversation about your health history.

This helps our team understand:

  • Your current health concerns

  • Any areas you would like the scan to focus on

  • Recent injuries, surgeries, or medical procedures

  • Medications or supplements you are taking

  • Symptoms you may be experiencing

  • Previous thermography scans, if applicable

This context helps ensure that your thermography results are interpreted accurately within the full picture of your health.

Step 2: The Acclimation Period

This step surprises many first-time clients, but it is one of the most important parts of the process.

After your intake, you will spend approximately 10–15 minutes acclimating in a temperature-controlled room.

During this time:

  • You will undress the areas being scanned

  • You will rest quietly

  • Your body’s surface temperature will stabilize

The scanning room is usually kept at a slightly cool temperature (around 68–72°F) to ensure accurate imaging.

This acclimation period allows your body to reset to a neutral temperature baseline, ensuring the images reflect your natural thermal patterns rather than outside influences like clothing or outdoor temperature.

Step 3: The Imaging — Quick, Comfortable, and Non-Contact

The imaging portion is simple and quick.

You will stand comfortably in front of a specialized infrared camera while the technician guides you through several positions so images can be captured from different angles.

During imaging:

  • The camera remains at a comfortable distance

  • There is no physical contact

  • You will briefly hold several positions (front, side, back)

  • Each image takes only a few seconds to capture

  • No radiation is used

  • Nothing is injected or applied

  • There is no compression

For breast thermography, imaging usually takes 3–5 minutes.

For full-body scans, it may take slightly longer depending on the number of regions evaluated.

Once the images are complete, you will simply get dressed and continue your day.

Step 4: Image Analysis by a Trained Specialist

After your appointment, your thermographic images are sent to a trained thermography interpreter — typically a physician or certified specialist with advanced training in medical thermography interpretation.

During analysis, the interpreter evaluates:

  • Overall temperature patterns across the body

  • Left-right symmetry comparisons

  • Hot spots, which may indicate inflammation or increased vascular activity

  • Cool regions, which may suggest reduced circulation

  • Vascular structures and blood flow patterns

  • Changes compared to previous scans, if available

Because this analysis is detailed and methodical, results are not provided immediately.

Reports are typically completed within a few business days after your appointment.

Step 5: Reviewing Your Results

Once your report is ready, you will receive a detailed explanation of your thermography findings.

At ThermaImage, we believe results should be clear and understandable, not filled with confusing clinical language.

Your report usually includes:

  • A summary of your thermal patterns

  • Color thermographic images showing your body’s heat map

  • The interpreter’s professional assessment

  • Recommendations for monitoring or follow-up if needed

Our team will help review the findings so you leave with a clear understanding of what the results mean for your health.

What Happens After Your Scan

For most clients, the next step is scheduling a follow-up scan within three to six months.

This second scan helps confirm that your baseline thermal patterns are stable.

Once your baseline is established, many clients move to annual thermography monitoring.

However, the ideal schedule may vary depending on your health history and personal wellness goals.

Some people choose more frequent scans during periods of health changes, such as:

  • beginning a new wellness protocol

  • recovering from an injury

  • making significant lifestyle adjustments

Because thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free, frequent monitoring is safe when clinically useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a thermography appointment take?

Most appointments take 20–30 minutes, including the acclimation period and imaging. Full-body scans may take slightly longer.

Will I feel anything during the scan?

No. Thermography involves no contact, no compression, no radiation, and no injections. Most people describe the experience as comfortable and easy.

When will I receive my results?

Thermography reports are typically available within a few business days after your appointment. A ThermaImage team member will review your results with you to ensure you understand your findings.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a support person with you. Our team will ensure your comfort and privacy during the imaging process.

What should I do if my results show something unusual?

If a thermogram identifies an area that needs further attention, your ThermaImage specialist will clearly explain the findings and recommended next steps. Thermography findings are a starting point for further evaluation, not a final diagnosis.
